Research Project

For my research project, I am interested in investigating how Mark Twain critiques unreal romanticism in society. In other words, I will be discussing how Twain discusses the differences between what is real and what is imaginary. I plan to explain how Twain contrasts both Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and their real/ imaginary ideas.
Twain does this by:
-Having Huck go on an adventure, and discovering for himself what is real
-Using Huck to critique Tom's imaginary ideas, and contribute his own possible ideas to the audience

  1. I really like your idea! Yes and maybe try looking up romantic literature and how Tom is the biggest role in making fun of that genre (the books he references to and how they make his plans go haywire).

  2. This is a great topic. Yes and I can imagine that a lot of your paper will focus on Tom and how he makes up adventures and how they contrast with reality. I'm interested to see how this will tie back to Twain's purpose

  3. Yes and make sure you address the ideals and beliefs that Romanticism entails. If you can find out which books Tom had read then you may find what aspects of Romanticism that Twain dislikes the most.
