During my research, I learned that the issue of drugs in nursing homes has been ongoing for several years. For many years, nursing homes have been providing Antipsychotic drugs to patients with Alzheimer's disease and Dementia. Rather than diagnosing any discomfort that their patients may have, nursing homes have been simply providing their patients with drugs that settle pain. However this does not specifically cure the discomfort that patients may have, and several organizations have declared these drugs potentially harmful. My research has made me aware of the potential danger of using drugs, and how drug distribution in nursing homes is more common than we think.
I think it is really surprising how many nursing homes still use antipsychotic drugs even though it is illegal to use them in unnecessary situations. The statistics were very high for dementia patients getting these drugs which is really frightening. It is good that the amount of patients given these drugs is going down.
